REGISTER NOW: Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW) Systems Engineering and Acquisition Conference, September 20-22

Our adversaries are using ubiquitous and cheap technology to further develop cyber warfare as well as advance and proliferate electromagnetic spectrum capabilities. EMW is an operational approach to seizing the initiative across the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS). The goal is to combine EMW capabilities in the sea, air and land domains to generate enhanced combat effects. EMW, in essence, means leveraging the cyberspace domain and the full electromagnetic spectrum for both offensive and defensive effects.

DON'T MISS NEXT WEEK'S AOC VIRTUAL SERIES: Modified Escort Jamming, August 25

Thursday, August 25 | 14:00-15:00 EST, 18:00 until 19:00 UTC

The presentation will start with a brief discussion of the capabilities of new threat radars: significantly longer ranges and powerful electronic protection features. It will cover the conventional jamming geometries we have been employing for years: self protection jamming and stand-off jamming. These techniques have difficulty providing adequate jamming protection against the new generation threat radars. Modified Escort Jamming is a new technique that can provide significant jamming to signal ratio, but requires careful station-keeping.

This webinar will provide some straight forward formulas for calculation of the station keeping requirements as a function of the ranges involved and the specifications of the threat radars. It also includes formulas for calculation of the J/S and burn through ranges achievable through this technique.

This and other considerations of dealing with new generation threat radars will be covered in the course Dave will be teaching on the Friday and Saturday following the 53rd Annual AOC International Symposium & Convention in Washington D.C.

REGISTER NOW: Electronic Warfare Asia, September 20-21 in Kuala Lumpur

EW Asia returns to Kuala Lumpur to debate the ever-evolving challenges of this complex subject. Bringing together senior delegations from regional and international militaries, defence intelligence communities and scientific and research agencies EW Asia will showcase focused discussions and ‘thought leader’ presentations.

Southeast Asian countries need to be alert to the challenges involved in maintaining surveillance and intelligence superiority across the information domain space, thus ensuring the national security of their borders. Recent experiences of electronic warfare (EW) actions applied by Russia in Ukraine and Syria have demonstrated how crucial this domain is, particularly as such up-to-date and effective EW operations have not been experienced internationally for many years.

China’s investment and gathering momentum in the expansion of its own military cyber and electronic warfare technologies presents serious challenges for Asian security services who believed that, until recently, they retained EM spectrum superiority.

An improved understanding of the complexity of these challenges being faced needs to be followed by the development of skill sets for defensive and, if necessary, offensive countermeasures.

REGISTER NOW! CEMA 2016 - Achieving Overmatch through the Convergence of Cyber, Signal, Electronic Warfare, Intelligence, and Space Capabilities, October 18-20

This upcoming October will mark 15 years of persistent conflict where the Army has enjoyed a distinct technological advantage in its fight against terrorism and in the conduct of counter-insurgency operations. Today we are on the brink of a new era of great power competition conflict. With a resurgent Russia and an escalating China, a civil war in Syria with international implications and Iran and North Korea steadily flexing their military presence, there are forces to be reckoned with. All are employing advanced electronic warfare and cyber capabilities at a rapid rate. Given these recent developments from prospective near-peer adversaries, the Army cannot afford to "wait until the wolf is at the door" and must prioritize maintaining overmatch; easier said than done. Limited resources dictate an innovative approach to the problem. The answer lies in the effective enterprise capability convergence of cyber, signal, electronic warfare, intelligence, information operations and space capabilities to ensure cyberspace dominance while simultaneously denying the same advantage to adversaries. The idea of capability convergence as a combat multiplier is the basis for this year’s conference theme.

SEPTEMBER AOC VIRTUAL SERIES: Sampling Theory & its Effects on System Performance, September 15

Thursday, September 15, 2016 18:00 until 19:00 UTC

The universe is fundamentally analogue, but almost all modern technologies are based on digital systems on some level. In fact, many aspects of why digital systems work the way they do can be traced back to the conversion between analogue and digital signals – a process known as sampling. An understanding of sampling theory is thus crucial to understanding how modern systems work.

However, sampling is traditionally explained by resorting to complex mathematics, which tends to obscure the relatively simple underlying concepts. This presentation will draw back the mathematical veil obscuring these fundamental concepts by using simple arguments and graphics to explain how and why sampling works the way it does. As part of this process, issues such as aliasing, the Shannon-Nyquist criterion, bandpass sampling, I-Q sampling, interleaved samplers and others will be explored. It is thus hoped that attendees will gain greater insight into many aspects of sampling and how these issues affect the operation of modern systems.

INDUSTRY NEWS: This is the Future of War
Battles in the next world war will be fought in the air, on the ground and online. "We’ve grown used to the fight being in just one domain," Dr. Peter Singer, a strategist at the think tank New America and coauthor of Ghost Fleet told Business Insider. "[But] we have these new domains that we’ve never fought in before, and that’s outer space, and cyber space." (Business Insider)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Artificial Intelligence Drone Defeats Fighter Pilot: The Future?
In an intriguing paper certain to catch the eye of senior Pentagon officials, a company claims that an artificial intelligence program it designed allowed drones to repeatedly and convincingly "defeat" a human pilot in simulations in a test done with the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL). A highly experienced former Air Force battle manager, Gene Lee, tried repeatedly and failed to score a kill, and "he was shot out of the air by the reds every time after protracted engagements." All of the missile battles were executed beyond Beyond Visual Range. (Breaking Defense)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Turn Off That iPhone, Commandant Tells Marines
Marines, turn off your iPhone and dig yourself a foxhole. That’s the Commandant’s message to young troops, based on embarrassing experiences in recent exercises. As cheap drones and other surveillance technologies spread worldwide, said Gen. Robert Neller, U.S. forces must re-learn how to hide — both physically and electronically — from increasingly tech-savvy adversaries. "We’ve got to change the way we’re thinking....An adversary can see us just as we see them," said Gen. Neller. "If you can be seen, you will be attacked." (Breaking Defense)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Leaked Report Reveals Russian Battlefield Cyber-Weapons
A new report has presented some stark findings about the U.K.'s cyber-readiness for modern war. A document, entitled Insights to "Training Smarter" Against a Hybrid Adversary, and seen by the Times aims to teach armed forces how to fight against a new kind of adversary. Among its more shocking conclusions is that Russia ‘outguns' the U.K. army on the battlefield. Not only does Russia outspend the U.K. in defence by a little over £10 billion but has been preparing for an entirely different war. (SC Magazine).

INDUSTRY NEWS: Why The F-22 and F-35 Stealth Fighters Will Revolutionize War in the Sky
In Len Deighton’s book Fighter, he describes the tactics used by the outnumbered English fighter pilots defending against German Luftwaffe bombers in the Battle of Britain. Deighton’s point was that the best British pilots used hit-and-run tactics emphasizing surprise and speed in order to minimize losses, rather than dogfighting at length with enemies after those advantages were spent. These tactics permitted small numbers of British fighters to tackle the aerial armadas of the German Luftwaffe. (The National Interest)

Talk about unusual. On Aug. 10, the U.S. Air Force announced it had sent its B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to join older, non-stealthy B-52 Stratofortresses and B-1 Lancers on Guam. It’s an extraordinary show of force in the Pacific region, because for the first time ever, America has based all three heavy bomber types on the island at once. (War is Boring)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Incoming Capability Gap: Canada’s Last Destroyer Leaves Service in Early 2017
Canada’s last destroyer will be taken out of service in the spring, leaving the country’s navy reliant on allies for longer-range air defence for at least the next seven years. HMCS Athabaskan, and similar destroyers, provided command and control capabilities over the years for the Royal Canadian Navy as well as what was called area air defence. But Athabaskan, Canada’s last destroyer, will be taken out of service within the next year, most likely in the spring, Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd, the new commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, told Postmedia Wednesday.
