Collaborative EW Symposium 2023
March 14-16, 2023 | Pt. Mugu, CA

Symposium theme: “Evaluating current EW innovation in context of current real world conflicts”

The war in Ukraine has identified the relevance of collaborative EW in support of rapid unfolding operations, with rapid adaptation and innovation contributing to the fight. What does this conflict teach us about what to do and what not to do in the spectrum? Who else will learn these lessons and to what result?”

The 50th year of the Collaborative EW Symposium at Pt. Mugu will provide a venue to disseminate current research in the fields of collaborative EW with an emphasis on innovation in collaborative EW. Prominent leaders, contributors, and representatives from the United States and Australian military, government, academia and industry will come together to address emerging technologies required to address current dynamic operations.

Submission deadline: Dec. 14

Electromagnetic Manoeuvre: Towards a Theoretical Underpinning
Nov. 10 | 2-3 p.m. EDT

Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery warned that losing the war in the air would cost the war itself. Over the best part of a century, airpower has defined conflict. The failure to win and sustain air superiority and supremacy makes victory at best difficult and at worst impossible. The need to secure Electromagnetic Superiority and Supremacy (E2S) will have a similar effect on the wars of tomorrow. Forces failing to win and hold E2S while denying the spectrum to their adversaries will find victory elusive. E2S is achieved by applying manoeuvre warfare principles to the electromagnetic spectrum. Manoeuvre warfare is not new, but it can teach us about E2S. We will ask how applicable manoeuvre warfare theory is to Electromagnetic Support Operations? How can it guide us and where must we exercise caution? This webinar will define E2S. It will explain its centrality to contemporary and future battles. It will summarise the tenets of manoeuvre warfare theory and discuss their applicability to E2S. Above all, it will seek to articulate a theoretical framework for E2S manoeuvre.

Two-way Time-transfer Digital Design for Distributed Array Operations
Nov. 17 | 2-3 p.m. EDT

In this presentation we will present a recently developed reusable digital design block for achieving TWTT on the Xilinx Zynq platform. The block includes time and phase correction, carrier-frequency offset correction, a 10 MHz reference and 1 PPS signal. TWTT is performed once per 1.3 millisecond frame and requires 28μs which is 2% of the frame time. The remainder of the frame is allocated to synchronized distributed beamforming, radar, communications and more. The IP has been validated with a 5 GHz radio and omnidirectional antennas achieving time alignment of 8.6 ps RMS (~15 degrees at 5 GHz and 30 degrees at X-band) in an emulated line-of-sight channel with no deviation in time alignment over long durations (~5 hours measured). These results indicate that DA operation across many relevant bands is possible. The time alignment was measured to be between 11 and 20 picoseconds in a variety of complex, short range channels. Current OTA performance is limited by low signal-to-noise ratio but future improvements include the addition of more gain in the radios for longer range performance. Following discussion of the design and initial performance metrics we will present theory and simulation regarding operation in complex multipath channels. We will conclude by discussing assumptions, limitations and future improvements.
