Cognitive Electronic Warfare and Reinforcement Learning
Sept. 8 | 2–3 p.m. ET

Cognitive Electronic Warfare (EW) systems are of critical importance to the future of EW, but despite this the underlying technologies are poorly understood. The goal of this webinar is to outline the architecture of modern cognitive EW systems and the relevant technologies. Specifically, how reinforcement learning works, using a variety of mechanisms to develop a sense, act, reward cycle to explore the solutions space. The webinar will conclude with a discussion of how reinforcement learning would be applied in the context of a missile engagement, requiring a cognitive system to deal with novel threats.

It’s Time to Get Your Playbook

Maneuvering and winning in the new era requires an EMSO playbook. But what plays should we include in it and why do we need it? Host Ken Miller talks with Dr. Bill Conley and John Knowles about strategies to include in our playbooks that can be rapidly implemented before the “game” starts, and how this will be addressed at AOC 2022, AOC’s annual international symposium and convention. They also dive into current affairs at the global level and in Congress, how to combine theater-level strategy with technological innovations, the current state of supply chain and microelectronics and they discuss what can be done about the current instability across the global sphere.

Dr. Bill Conley is Chief Technology Officer at Mercury Systems and John Knowles is the Editor of the Journal of Electromagnetic Dominance (JED).

Vladimir Putin has condemned Western sanctions imposed because of Russia's war in Ukraine as a fever that poses a threat to the entire world. In a speech to an economic forum in Vladivostok, he said Russia was coping with the West's economic "aggression." (BBC)

While many Chechen fighters have deployed in Ukraine for Russia, this group is there to defend the country from the Russians. (NPR)

Ostensibly, the Marine Corps has a long history of appreciating the warfighting benefits provided by electronic warfare (EW) – particularly by airborne platforms, having flown the EA-6B Prowler in critical support of Joint Forces until its retirement in 2019. Ground-based capabilities, however, have always been extremely limited, and now with the Corps’ decision to not replace its Prowlers with manned aircraft, such as the EA-18G Growler, the need to develop and implement an alternate approach and path for its AEA mission is even more critical and paramount in the near-term.
