Help Recognize the Outstanding Efforts of Industry Peers

A central tenet of AOC's mission is recognizing individuals, groups and military units for their outstanding performance in furthering the aims of the AOC and the Electromagnetic Warfare enterprise. The AOC has a number of awards that are available each year, with three categories – Prestige, Community and Chapter Flow Up.

The AOC continues to work in collaboration with the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS). As part of this collaboration, the AOC is contributing to several sessions during the upcoming DEPS Annual Directed Energy Science and Technology Symposium, April 25-29, in Mobile, Alabama. Below are three sessions to which the AOC is interested in contributing presentations. Presentations may be from government, industry or academia. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are emerging technologies and processes that are proving beneficial in numerous fields across defense and commercial applications. There is potential to apply these processes in support of HEL engagements. The goal of the sessions is to explore AI and ML as applied to the HEL engagement. Presentations and posters are solicited to increase the understanding of the DE community on the capabilities and limitations of AI and ML. Particular interest in AI and ML applied to target detection, identification, aim point selection and engagement to include BDA.

Assuring Survivable EMS System
Discuss EMS survivability as it applies to EMSO-related systems that incorporate electronic components that might be susceptible to electromagnetic effects, including Spectrum protection, system adaptability, spectrum access flexibility and efficiency and multi-function capabilities. Unclassified papers and presentations are sought at Distribution Limitations A, C and D levels.

Integrating Full-Spectrum Sensor Data for real-time EM Battle Management
Session would look at collection/distribution/fusion of RF-EO-IR sensor data for networked/efficient battle management, including data integration, AI/ML for spectrum agility and training, etc. Unclassified papers and presentations are sought at Distribution Limitations A, C and D levels.

Tactical ISR Principles, Systems, and Techniques
April 4-27 | Mondays & Wednesdays | 1-4 p.m. EDT

In modern military operations and strategy, ISR is probably more significant than the bombs and bullets that are used to execute the strategy. In the vernacular of the US DOD, ISR is a very significant “force multiplier.” In addition, ISR has a very important role in peacetime and political operations in providing situational awareness. It has been stated that intelligence derived from airborne and overhead reconnaissance imagery may have prevented a nuclear WWIII between the Soviet Union and the US during the Cuban missile crisis.

The Tactical ISR short course will stimulate and expand your thinking on how to address the ISR and related issues confronting you. The purpose of the short course is to provide an overview of this dynamic and diverse field to operations staff and development staff. An exposure to this subject will enable them to make improved operational and investment decisions. They will have a better understanding of where the technology they are employing or developing can best be exploited in the future by the military forces.


Electronic Warfare and the Moscow Criteria
April 7 | 2-3 p.m. EDT

The Royal Air Force’s Bomber Command had finished the Second World War in proud possession of 100 Group. This was the world’s first dedicated, holistic offensive counter-air unit. 100 Group was tasked with attriting the radars, radio communications and radio navigation systems used by the Luftwaffe’s Integrated Air Defence System (IADS). No sooner had the war finished, than 100 Group disbanded. As the Cold War chilled, Bomber Command faced a new threat. No longer were bombers to be sent over enemy territory night after night to wear down the enemy. Strategic air power had not disappeared but had changed in character. Bomber Command’s emerging strategic bomber V-Force was tasked with what would be one-way missions. They would run the gauntlet of Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact IADS. If they got to their targets, they would deliver an atomic weapon. Repeated strikes would be unlikely. Thus, the late 1950s and early 1960s witnessed a profound shift in RAF electronic warfare. No longer was EW to be used to help roll back a hostile IADS. Instead, electronic warfare adopted a more tactical orientation: Simply provide enough protection to get the bombers to their targets.

This webinar will show how Bomber Command reoriented its EW posture in the wake of the Second World War. It will detail electronic warfare system implementation across the V-Force. The webinar will explain the roles EW was expected to play and how the Command’s Cold War EW posture took the RAF out of the operational level EW business for many years, until now!

Young Crow Engineers

The AOC STEM Student of the Year Scholarship

AOC provides scholarships to students currently in their sophomore or junior year of college. Each year, one male and one female student studying engineering or engineering technology and interested in working in the aerospace and defense industry is awarded a scholarship of $12,500 each. Industry News

While the western media has in recent years made much of the Kremlin’s investment in advanced kinetic capabilities – notably hypersonic missiles, new strategic weapons, a nuclear-powered cruise missile, nuclear-armed torpedoes and laser weapons – it has given far less attention to another area of warfare where the Russian military poses an increasing challenge to the US and its NATO allies. Operations over the past decade have served to demonstrate the importance Russia attaches to electronic warfare (EW) – or radio-electronic combat (radioelektronnaya borba – REB) – as an intrinsic part of its military doctrine. Japan says Russian amphibious ships transiting through a narrow strait between its islands could be moving fresh forces from Russia’s far east to Ukraine. Four landing ship tanks, including one with its deck full of military trucks, were seen sailing in the Pacific Ocean westbound in the middle of last week, according to a news release from the Joint Staff’s Public Affairs office within Japan’s Defense Ministry. President Joe Biden and national security officials warned that Russia may be ramping toward cyberattacks on U.S. critical infrastructure as the war in Ukraine continues. “Today, my administration is issuing new warnings that, based on evolving intelligence, Russia may be planning a cyberattack against us,” Biden said March 21 at a Business Roundtable quarterly meeting. “As I said, the magnitude of Russia’s cyber capacity is fairly consequential, and it’s coming.” (C4ISRNet)
