Focus on the Future
(MDO 2035 and Beyond)
By 2035, as the Joint Force responds to adversaries contesting international norms in either competition or armed conflict, it will conduct operations in an emerging operational environment shaped by four interrelated characteristics: adversaries are contesting all domains, the EMS, and the information environment and U.S. dominance is not assured. This event will focus on DOTMLPF considerations for an MDO 2035 ready Army and how emerging technologies in electronic warfare, cyber, signals intelligence, information operations, and other forms of non-kinetic fires will support such operational formations.

The next AOC Virtual Series webinar is happening this Thursday. There's still time and space to register:

Thursday, February 11, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET
From Sarissa To Cyber Warfare
Presented by: Dr. Peter Vincent Pry

This webinar will survey the history of decisive military technologies that have caused a Revolution in Military Affairs, resulting not only in new tactics and strategies but changing the course of civilization and world history. For example, ancient Macedonia’s King Phillip II (382-336 BC) introduction of the sarrisa—a spear measuring about 18 feet in length, much longer than those used by any other army of antiquity—became the basis for a revolutionary new military formation, the Macedonian Phalanx, that enabled Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) to conquer the known world, spread Greek culture, and transform civilization into the Hellenistic Age (323-31 BC). The webinar is inspired by, and will seek to update and expand upon, strategic thinker Bernard Brodie’s classic 1962 book “From Crossbow To H-Bomb: The Evolution of the Weapons and Tactics of Warfare” that contributed to the development of nuclear deterrence and arms control as “the answer” to the Revolution in Military Affairs caused by the invention of nuclear weapons. Most of the course will focus on the present era and the future, on new military technologies that could potentially cause a Revolution in Military Affairs and potentially change the course of civilization.

Be sure to check out the full 2021 schedule to sign up for more webinars.

Chapter News

The Association of Old Crows Garden State Chapter is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of its beloved member, Bradley David Farnsworth, age 36, on January 29, 2021 following complications with a heart condition. He was the son of Brian D. Farnsworth of East Liverpool, Ohio and of Lyneah Breskvar Huff of Apollo Beach, Florida.

If you would like to join in making a lasting tribute to Bradley, the family has established the Bradley Farnsworth Fund for Undergraduate Research at Case School of Engineering. You can read more about Bradley's achievements and involvement with his alma mater here, where there is also a guide for supporting this fund in his memory.

John Shawhan has been selected as a 2020 Dixie Crow Exemplar. The selection is long overdue but well deserved. John has been member of the Association of Old Crows since 1983 while he was working at the Kittyhawk Chapter in Dayton, Ohio.

Defeating a swarm of small unmanned aircraft systems may one day require faster decision making than what a single human being can provide, and may mean the use of artificial intelligence to make those decisions. Right now, though, rules of engagement still require a human in the loop. (DOD)
