Collaborative EW in support of Distributed Maritime Operations

The 49th Annual Point Mugu Collaborative Electronic Warfare Symposium will provide a venue to disseminate current research in the fields of Collaborative Electronic Warfare, with an emphasis on EW in support of distribute maritime Operations. Prominent leaders, contributors, and representatives from the military, government, academia, and industry will come together to address current Electronic Warfare gaps to support distributed operations and emerging technologies required to address these gaps.

This call for presentations or demonstrations challenges presenters to explore collaborative EW through innovation and invention. Presentations or demonstrations from all Services, DoD, Industry, and Academia are requested to identify technical paths, options, and potential opportunities for EW collaboration with a support to Distributed operations focus. Submitted abstracts are specifically requested to address one or more of the symposium topics:

- Jointly interoperable EW technologies
- EW technology advancements impact on TTPs
- Speed to DMO Fleet

Infrared Countermeasures: A Heated Topic

January 30, 14:00-15:00 EST


This webinar will cover the general technology underlying IR guided weapons and countermeasures against them. We will begin with IR theory and atmospheric absorption. Next we will discuss sensors and elements and characteristics of sensors such as IR sensors, field of view, lenses, low light level TV, sensor resolution, lasers, forward looking IR (FLIR), laser range finder, and IR search and track. Then we will consider IR missile guidance, atmospheric weather effects, and IR image examples.

Next we will look more directly at IR countermeasures (IRCM). To consider the IR guided weapons that we want to neutralize, we will consider aircraft IR missile envelope, IR air to air missiles, MANPADS, and IR SAMs. Specific IRCM techniques and technologies we will consider include pyrotechnique flares, flare employment, IRCM tactics, and directed IRCM.

The 4th AOC EW Asia event will consider the future of EW and EM Operations in the changing light of current and emerging threats.

Outlining Approval Paths and Best Practices to Export EW Technology.

This forum provides a venue for stakeholders, thought-leaders and experts in Releasability, Export Control and Electronic Warfare to come together to focus on the USG processes required to acquire export approval via direct commercial sales (DCS) and foreign military sales (FMS) of EW technology. The first day will be classified SECRET / US Only and outline the specific technology release processes and best practices to enable positive export decisions for industry and the USG. The second day will be focused on our foreign allies and outline best practices and ways to leverage USG DCS and FMS modalities of sale to procure capabilities that fulfill EW operational requirements.

Complex Electromagnetic Warfare and the Multi Domain Battle

The 25th AOC EW Europe event in Liverpool will bring together world-leading experts from the military, government, academia and industry. Delegates will progress their understanding of the issues, technology and capabilities that underpin their national Electronic Warfare abilities and allow them to enhance their capabilities both nationally and in international collaborative defence. 

The Multi Domain Battlefield (MDB) includes the Electro-magnetic and Information Domains (including cyber operations), as well as the Land, Maritime, Air and Space Domains. The MDB underpins and enables every decision, communication and navigation system as well as defensive and offensive actions. Spectrum management capabilities are vital to all of warfare and especially manoeuvre warfare – we all know that without spectrum dominance the war is lost before it is begun.  New and current threat systems and strategies for defeating them will be considered alongside the technological developments most likely to influence the complex electromagnetic warfare of the future.

Alongside two technical conference streams, the event features an exhibition area for specialist suppliers to showcase their technologies, products and services.

A fundamental part of the AOC's mission is investing in the next generation of Crows. One of the most significant ways we do this is by providing the AOC/Raytheon Scholarship to Sophmore and Junior year college students. We provide two scholarships annually, each in the amount of $12,500, to students studying in the fields of engineering or engineering technology. These scholarships are funded by a generous donation from Raytheon.

Do you have a child, sibling, cousin, neighbor or friend studying in these fields? Encourage them to apply! Applicants must be Sophomores or Juniors in the 2020-2021 school year. We are soliciting topics in support of this year’s theme, “Maintaining Dominance in the
Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) by Rapidly Fielding and Modifying Systems Using Open
Standards and Innovation.” Papers to support this theme should relate to Electronic Warfare
(EW), Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR), or Avionics. Proposed topic abstracts
may be submitted for technical solutions (both software and hardware), acquisition strategies,
initiatives, new technologies, novel methods of integration for existing technologies,
techniques, simulation, methods, policy/doctrine, interoperability, open systems, modeling,
architectures, and best practices.

EW: Collaborate for Success

The Sixth International Conference on Electronic Warfare (EWCI 2020) is being organised by the much Awarded India Chapter of Association of Old Crows (AOC), Bangalore, and has the active support of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Government of India, Ministry of Defence and the Defence Public Sector Unit (DPSU), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bangalore. The Conference is envisaged to be of great use for modern armed forces, military planners, developers, procurers, testers, trainers, and vendors of the latest EW technologies and systems. Past conferences in the series attracted large delegations from Indian Armed Services, DRDO, Defence PSUs, and national and international EW professionals. A large scale indoor exhibition will accompany the conference, displaying the latest EW products from international EW organisations.


The Granite State Roost Educational Foundation awarded three scholarships to three University of New Hampshire (UNH) engineering students at the Awards Ceremony held at UNH on 27 September 2019. 

The scholarship is named after the Pentagon’s former Deputy Director for Electronic Warfare, Tony Grieco. BAE Systems underwrites the scholarship in honor of Grieco, who was well known in defense and Congressional circles for his strong support of electronic warfare issues. The scholarship is given to candidates who show promise in science and engineering and who are enrolled in a college-level science or engineering program.

The highly anticipated annual AOC Capital Club Holiday Party was hosted by outgoing President Troy “Bucket” Orwan USAF (Ret.) and incoming President Colonel Donald “Don” Revell Colonel U.S. Marine (Ret.) at the Army Navy Country Club Arlington Virginia on 13 December 2019. This event was hosted amidst the majestic golf club and historic grounds conveniently located just a few minutes south of our Nation’s Capital. 


The Dixie Crow Chapter held its annual holiday party on December 14, with 79 guests in attendance at the Southern Landings Club House. Matt Bryant, Dixie Crow Chapter president, welcomed all in attendance and introduced Col James Wilson, senior material leader AFLCMC/WNY, to provide an overview of 2019 prior to the festivities, including a catered meal, door prizes and music by the Chris Anderson Band. Thank you to Greg and Denise Carter for coordinating the event.

Industry News

Boeing has announced that one of two F/A-18F Super Hornet testbeds that it is using in the development of the Block III upgrades for the U.S. Navy flew with an infrared search and track system, or IRST, for the first time late last year. (The Drive)

The Air Force is looking to transition to an open architecture system for electronic warfare that would allow airmen to coordinate operations across multiple platforms. This shift intends to address "the next generation electronic warfare (EW) threats that require rapidly adaptable, next generation system-of-system solutions," an Air Force request for information states. (Inside Defense)


A small California-based aviation firm has announced that it recently completed engine and flight control testing on the ground on a stealthy unmanned aircraft known as the Fifth Generation Aerial Target, or 5GAT. (The Drive)


In the coming weeks, the Navy is slated to unveil a new plan for what ships plans to put to sea in the coming decades, and how it wants those hulls configured. One of the “must haves” in the emerging era of small drones, ballistic missiles, stealthy aircraft and unmanned ships is the ability to see further and react faster, as countries from China to Iran to North Korea throw a dizzying array of advanced weapons into the mix. (Breaking Defense)
