REGISTER NOW: AOC Electronic Warfare Singapore, January 17-18

We live in a time of increasing uncertainty on many fronts. Threats, challenges and opportunities are rising. Technology is accelerating. The world is undoubtedly changing and in unforeseen ways. In terms of future warfare, national forces are being re-shaped and re-equipped to face an operational maneuver space that will be complex and connected, but constrained. It may well be chaotic unless the right, informed choices are made now. The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most vital areas in the world and the focus of much change, but also of uncertainty. In terms of EW and electromagnetic operations, how can we make sense of all of these things?

AOC EW Singapore will consider the future of EW and EM Operations in the changing light of current and emerging threats, including Hybrid Warfare and Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) where potential opponents are out-performing the West. It will consider the possible responses, how thinking and attitudes must change, and examine the new capabilities that will be required across all lines of development, by all services, in all countries in the free world. The Conference will consist of plenary sessions focusing on operations, defence capability development, and industry inventiveness. AOC EW Singapore 2017 will bring together the communities of EW, SIGINT, C4ISR, Cyber EM Activities (CEMA) and more. Speakers will include leaders and operators from the military, government, academia, S&T and international R&D communities and, crucially industry. This is an unclassified English language Asia-Pacific focused EW networking, exhibition, workshop and conference and is not to be missed.

Speakers include:
Professor David Stupples, Professor of Electronic & Radio Systems, Director EW Systems Research, City University London, UK
Daniela Pistoia, Corporate Chief Scientist, Elettronica SpA, Italy
Colonel Stephen Miller USAF (Ret.), Senior Research Engineer, Strategic Program Development Lead, GTRI, US
Rear Admiral Simon Williams, Chairman, Clarion Events, UK

INDUSTRY NEWS: Army Battles Policy Hurdles in Cyber Electromagnetic Activities
The Army stood up cyber electromagnetic activity cells that can — by way of challenging capabilities integration work — operate effectively at the tactical level, the cyber director in the Army’s G-3/5/7 division said. Among the key challenges, however, is working through some of the bureaucratic hurdles. The structure of the cyber electromagnetic activity cells is key to the concept. (Federal Times)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Decision Time: Half of US F-15s Need Overhauls – Or Retirement
The F-15C Eagle weighs about 16 tons, but with nearly 47,000 pounds of thrust pushing it down the runway it feels more like 16 ounces. In a just seconds, the plane passes 100 miles per hour, then twice that. It hops off the ground but the pilot, Maj. Jay "Fat" Talbert keeps it level, fifty feet up, and pours on more speed. "Here come the G’s," Talbert warns his passenger in the back seat. Then he pulls back the stick. (Defense One)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Army Secretary Sees 'More Work' Ahead in Tapping Commercial Vendors
The Army has struggled to build its comfort level in buying commercial off-the-shelf products, often arguing too much has to be changed to meet military standards, and the service is up against having to work contracts through a sluggish acquisition process for which commercial industry doesn’t have the patience. INDUSTRY NEWS: US Pacific Commitments Will Survive Duterte, Trump: Adm. Harris
Neither President Trump’s transition in DC nor President Duterte’s eruptions in Manila will derail America’s 70-year military commitment to the Pacific, Adm. Harry Harris said today. US-Philippine cooperation continues unabated despite Duterte’s denunciation of the alliance, the head of Pacific Command said. (The senior State Department official for the Pacific, Daniel Russel, recently dismissed Duterte’s statements as "a lot of noise" and noted nothing had actually changed despite the Philippine president’s public comments). INDUSTRY NEWS: Our Local Part in Being Part of the "big stick" in America’s Defense Never Goes Out of Style; it Just Goes Cyber
So I decided that, just maybe, further reflection was warranted even though I believe I have a fairly firm grasp on the significance of the post’s Army Cyber Command – which breaks ground on its new headquarters Nov. 29. My post-reflection epiphany is that the Augusta region is essentially the "big stick" that Theodore Roosevelt spoke of more than a century ago. And we’ve been the big stick for a long time, whether we knew it or not. (Augusta Chronicle)
