DON'T MISS TOMORRROW'S AOC VIRTUAL SERIES: Cybersecurity - Supply Chain Considerations, November 10

As the cyber threat evolves and the incidence of attacks increases, maintaining preparedness and situational awareness is vitally important. Customized malware, DDoS attacks and the vulnerabilities of mobile and enterprise networks all present real challenges.

Complex IT networks, web-based applications, cloud computing and the use of social media as a communications tool have considerably increased the risk of becoming a victim of cyberattacks, advanced persistent threats and phishing attempts.

This webinar will discuss the aspects of instrument security based on the DoD NISPOM/DSS ISFO requirements including sanitization and declassification procedures. Malware protection for different instrument platforms and updates for the operating systems in line with customer’s IT policies are explained.

REGISTER TODAY: Don't Miss AOC Electronic Warfare Singapore, January 17-18

We live in a time of increasing uncertainty on many fronts. Threats, challenges and opportunities are rising. Technology is accelerating. The world is undoubtedly changing and in unforeseen ways. In terms of future warfare, national forces are being re-shaped and re-equipped to face an operational maneuver space that will be complex and connected, but constrained. It may well be chaotic unless the right, informed choices are made now. The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most vital areas in the world and the focus of much change, but also of uncertainty. In terms of EW and electromagnetic operations, how can we make sense of all of these things?

AOC EW Singapore will consider the future of EW and EM Operations in the changing light of current and emerging threats, including Hybrid Warfare and Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) where potential opponents are out-performing the West. It will consider the possible responses, how thinking and attitudes must change, and examine the new capabilities that will be required across all lines of development, by all services, in all countries in the free world. The Conference will consist of plenary sessions focusing on operations, defence capability development, and industry inventiveness. AOC EW Singapore 2017 will bring together the communities of EW, SIGINT, C4ISR, Cyber EM Activities (CEMA) and more. Speakers will include leaders and operators from the military, government, academia, S&T and international R&D communities and, crucially industry. This is an unclassified English language Asia-Pacific focused EW networking, exhibition, workshop and conference and is not to be missed.

INDUSTRY NEWS: Army Wargames Hone Battlefield Cyber Teams
The Army is reinforcing its combat brigades with cyber soldiers. In 18 months of wargames with a wide range of units — tanks, Strykers, infantry, Airborne, Rangers — Army Cyber Command troops have brought hacking and jamming to bear on the (simulated) battlefield alongside guns and bombs. The exercises have already revealed cybersecurity shortfalls that prompted the Army to add two network defense specialists to the permanent ("organic") communications staff of every brigade. Two soldiers per brigade may not seem much, but Army-wide that adds up to over 100 personnel, all skilled specialists in high demand for other cyber missions. (Breaking Defense)

INDUSTRY NEWS: IOC Just a First Step for Cyber Mission Force
According to U.S. Cyber Command, all 133 Cyber Mission Force teams mandated by the Defense Department's Cyber Strategy have reached initial operating capability. But military leaders say there is still a long way to go to prepare the military to fight in today's cyber and electronic domain. The Cyber Mission Force is scheduled to reach full operational capability by the end of fiscal 2018 and will grow from 5,000 to 6,200 personnel between now and then. (FCW)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Investing in Defense Technology: DoD, Industry Don’t See Eye-to-Eye
The Pentagon and the defense industry are of the same mind on the importance of technological supremacy. But how to pay for it remains a major issue. As Defense Secretary Ashton Carter nears the end of his term, he is not slowing down on initiatives to spur technological innovation, and has laid the groundwork for the next administration to carry on with the mission. He has appointed a "defense innovation board" and intends to name a "chief innovation officer" who will advise the top leadership on how to keep the military on the cutting edge. INDUSTRY NEWS: DARPA Ups Funding For Autonomous Electronic Warfare Work
DARPA is taking another step toward building autonomous electronic warfare systems with a small contract award to BAE Systems. Artificial intelligence and autonomy loom large in the Pentagon these days. And electronic warfare, much more quietly, dominates a great deal of thinking across the services these days after we’ve watched how the Russians operate against Ukraine and in Syria. So DARPA’s additional $13.3 million award announced today is worth noting. (Breaking Defense)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Embedded Cyber Teams Prepare Army Brigades to Face Invisible Threat
A pilot program that sends teams of cyber warriors to brigade-level units to train with them is a key step forward in enabling commanders to use the Army’s cyber warfighting capabilities, leaders said. "We’ve got to get a better idea of the threat that outguns and outmatches us," said Col. Jerry Turner, commander of 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. (Army Times)

F-35 pilots will eventually be able to control a small group of drones flying nearby from the air, performing sensing, reconnaissance and targeting functions, according to Air Force Chief Scientist Greg Zacharias. Currently the flight path, sensor payload and weapons disposal of airborne drones such as Predators and Reapers are coordinated from ground control stations. In the future, however, drones may be fully operated from the cockpit of advanced fighter jets such as the Joint Strike Fighter or F-22, Zacharias said several months ago in an interview. INDUSTRY NEWS: Army Faces Training Challenges as it Deploys Cyber Capabilities to Smaller Units
As we’ve reported before, the Army is playing catch-up after letting its electronic warfare capabilities atrophy during a decade in which it was largely preoccupied with counterinsurgency warfare and while potential adversaries — notably Russia — have made significant advances in their ability to attack the communications and computer systems that are vital to modern warfare.
