PAPERS DUE MONDAY! Recent Defense Cuts Require Innovative Management of Aging EW Systems; Share Your Ideas!
AOC will host the EMS Combat Systems Life Cycle Management Conference in Dahlgren, VA, July 17-19, 2012. In the wake of constrained Department of Defense (DoD) budgets, Electronic Warfare (EW) combat systems must develop strategies of integration and cost-effective methods for sustainment to remain in operational use by the warfighter. Submitted papers should address these areas:

1. Combat Systems Integration and Life Cycle Cost and Performance Improvements
2. Combat System Component Integration

Deadline for abstracts is Monday, June 4. Submit today!

NEXT WEEK: Spectrum Challenges for Air, Sea Battlespace Operations Addressed, June 5-6 in Charleston, S.C.
Join us next week in Charleston for a taste of late spring and a truly interactive symposium format, including a Benefit Reception aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown. This event also coincides with the Charleston Spoleto festival – a huge treat to area visitors that same week. More importantly, it takes the convergence discussion right down to the operational level focusing on how we need to prepare for future combined arms conflicts in the South China Sea environment.

The conference includes an unclassified day at the Citadel, followed by a classified day at SPAWAR facility. Conference begins Tuesday, so register now and don't miss this key event!

PERFORMANCE AND VULNERABILITES of Modern IADs and SAMs, June 19-21 in Huntsville, AL
China, North Korea, Russia and Iran have shown substantial growth in their Integrated Air Defense (IAD) and Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) programs, posing a significant threat to the air superiority long enjoyed by the U.S. and its allies. The Association of Old Crows (AOC) and the Defense Intelligence Agency's (DIA) Missile and Space Intelligence Center (MSIC) come together at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL to present Performance & Vulnerabilities of Modern IADs/SAMs Conference. Scheduled for June 19-21, this three-day symposium provides an in-depth review of technical analysis of both modern IADs and SAMs. Discussions cover threat system capabilities and vulnerabilities, status of new development programs, and identify the current and projected proliferation of high-interest air defense systems.

NEW COURSE: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Missions, Payloads and Links, July 24-27 in San Diego!
Join us July 24-27 at Cubic Defense in San Diego for this practical introduction to UAVs and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), their missions, payloads and data links. The main thrust of the course is to understand the traceability of mission-related performance requirements from the target, through the payloads and data links, to the operational user. The course begins a brief overview of the history of UAV development and current UAV types, including how various types of UAVs can be launched and recovered.

A major portion of the course is devoted to Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) payloads including EO/IR IRLS, LIDAR/LADAR, MSI, HSI, SAR, and EW payloads. The second major portion of the course is devoted to understanding the various communications and data links that modern UAVs employ, and covers the technical and operational characteristics of the Common Data Link, SATCOM, C2 and UHF data links, and link susceptibility to jamming. The course culminates with an end-to-end performance analysis taking target requirements through the atmosphere, payloads, links and, finally, to the operational user.

When news outlets recently quoted U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claiming that State Department operatives hacked the websites of al-Qaida affiliates in Yemen, we didn't know whether to be proud of the feds' leet skills or appalled at the administration's hypocrisy regarding hacking.
