IMPACT OF EXTREMISM: Information Operations Europe, February 22-23
This conference explores how individuals and groups use the information environment to advance extremism within nation states. The events surrounding the "Arab Spring" awakened Western countries to the plight of disenfranchised populations in the Arab Region and Northern Africa. Large groups of disaffected people coalesced their anger to overthrow long-standing governments. These groups leveraged the information environment to communicate on a world stage while garnering support within their home nation, across their region and from the entire world. This same information environment is available to other groups to advance their goals and objectives.

DISCUSSION TOPIC: Do We Need an EMS Billy Mitchell?
This article captures a conversation that’s been happening around EW, IO and EMS professional watercoolers for several years, but it’s actually been discussed at a much more in-depth perspective.

The question is "Do we need an EMS Billy Mitchell?"

Cyber certainly is like one aspect of aviation in Mitchell's heyday; it is one aspect much like tactical pursuit was part of the ongoing aviation discussion at the Air Corps Tactical School (ACTS) more than 90 years ago. The rest of the discussion taking place at ACTS was maturing the rest of the air domain and how to optimize and develop strategies for strategic bombardment, military resupply, ISR, etc.

So the real question is: How do we develop all the capabilities of the Electromagnetic Spectrum – the integration of Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, Offensive Cyber Operations and ISR?

No argument that cyber security is essential, but Billy Mitchell wasn’t focused on just defense. He was a visionary in seeing all that the air domain could provide.

We need to focus on the full maturation and development of Electromagnetic Spectrum strategies. The EMS Pearl Harbor is the real risk the current Billy Mitchells are preparing for. – Norm Balchunas

Do We Need a Cyber Billy Mitchell?

For the last few years, the talk has been that we are at risk of a cyber Pearl Harbor or a cyber Sept. 11. The context often is that we need a catastrophic wake-up call in order to get our cyber house in order. (Washington Technology)
