9/11 STORIES: The Day at Barksdale AFB

Barksdale AFB; right in the middle of an exercise: planes, weapons, personnel, everything ... I was hanging with the crewdogs in the alert facility watching CNN a few minutes after the North Tower was hit.

A few seconds later the South Tower got hit, and the crews had to run out to the planes (as part of the exercise). I eventually ended up back at the Battle Staff to help coordinate AF-1's arrival and to watch (sadly) the collapse of the towers on our big screen.

I'll echo CAPT Hulsey's entry above regarding EW; at the same time I believe EW and EWO roles were in a state of change since the early '90s. We also took a more serious look at what constituted a WMD (not just nukes); that certain weapons can be "massively disruptive" as well as "massively destructive."
