NEW JULY WEBINAR: SAR and GMTI – Two Great Radar Modes That Go Great Together

Modern air-to-ground radar operation is dominated by two modes: ground-moving target indication (GMTI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). GMTI is focused on detection and geolocation of vehicles and personnel moving on the ground, while SAR produces fine-resolution imagery of stationary objects. These modes, while similar on the surface, have historically been realized with very different and dedicated hardware and software. More recently, however, multi-function radar systems have enabled a blending of these heretofore distinct modalities.
This tutorial will begin with a quick review of air-to-ground radar operation, quickly moving into a comparison and contrasting of the SAR and GMTI modes. Next, a detailed description of the implementation and processing behind these modes will be presented. Finally, several examples of combined modes – applications sharing attributes of both SAR and GMTI – will be examined.
