The AOC’s 23rd European event in Lausanne, Switzerland, is under way! With 80 exhibitors, 8 sponsors, 45 participating nations and 50 presentations covering the AOC mission area, this year's EW Europe is bigger than ever! The conference has brought together the EW, SIGINT, C4ISR, Cyber EM Activities (CEMA) communities and more, with speakers including leaders and operators from the military, government, academia, S&T and international R&D communities and, crucially, industry.

Requirements are a fundamental part of systems engineering, but are often poorly understood, particularly in the context of Electronic Warfare systems. The goal of this presentation is to provide the audience an understanding of requirements engineering as it applies to EW programs. This will include a discussion of how EW systems are measured, how those metrics can be translated into system requirements, and qualities of a good requirement. The presentation concludes with a discussion of requirements from EW projects, their impact on system design, and how they can be improved.

 

This course will cover the unified presentation of the fundamental design principles of LPI radar. This includes a thorough treatment of the numerous types of wideband modulations that can be used to reduce the  probability of a noncooperative intercept receiver’s ability to intercept and extract the waveform modulation parameters (which may easily lead to an effective jammer response). We will also cover the intercept receiver time-frequency and bi-frequency signal processing techniques that can extract the wideband waveform parameters. Autonomous classification and parameter extraction algorithms are also an objective such that a real-time jammer response can be developed – just what we did not want to happen!

On July 18, the AOC SIGINT Industry Partner Project (SIGINT IPP) will hold an event, entitled “Winning the EMS: The Future of Army SIGINT.” The event will take place on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and will study how the Army is prepared to fight in the EMS across DOTMLPF, specifically discussing SIGINT/EW/CO requirements, training, and organization. The Army is making significant progress, but there remain key challenges to address and opportunities on which to capitalize to have a decisive advantage in future warfare.

This two-session event, featuring a congressional panel discussion and an Industry Solutions Forum, will draw leadership and expertise from the US Army Intelligence Center of Excellence (ICOE), the Cyber Center of Excellence (CCoE), the PEO Intelligence Electronic Warfare and Sen- sors (IEW&S), and the defense industry. Both sessions qualify as "Widely Attended Events" and are open to military, government, and industry. The event is FREE, but registration is required.

The first session is a Congressional Panel Discussion, hosted by Rep. Jody Hice (GA-10), a member of the EW Working Group and House Armed Services Committee (HASC). This session will feature a keynote speaker (Lt. Gen. Scott Berrier, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-2, invited) and panel to discuss developments in the integration of SIGINT, EW, and Cyberspace Operations, as well as the US Army SIGINT Strategy.  The second session immediately following is the separate Industry Solutions Forum, which will feature an industry showcase (available to sponsors), a networking reception, and a brief program featuring Army EW/SIGINT leadership.

The Association of Old Crows (AOC) Educational Foundation (AEF) awarded two scholarships in the amount of $12,500 each to two college students studying in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Selection of applicants is based on academic excellence in a STEM area of study, and an interest in and potential future contribution to national defense. These scholarships are funded by a generous $25,000 donation from the Raytheon Corporation.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will have gained a clearer understanding of how the parameters of radar and EW systems interact to determine system performance - the fundamental objective of the radar and jammer range equations. The Modern Threats: Surface-to-Air Missile Systems Conference will provide the latest findings from ongoing, allsource analysis of high interest threat air defense systems to include threat system capabilities and vulnerabilities, status of new development programs, and current and projected proliferation. The inaugural 2018 EMSO Challenge is a unique two-day event that will include hands on, team-based EMSO Decathlon challenge events in the morning followed by afternoon technical briefing sessions that will be Unclassified. The conference will focus on emerging concepts, innovative technologies, and unique approaches to current challenges that exist within contested and congested electromagnetic spectrum operations.

The EMSO Decathlon is a STEM-focused hands on competition consisting of 10 team-based technical challenges that include principles of Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, and Cyber Warfare. The challenges require basic knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with an aim to maximize the learning experience, promote intellectual development of EW/Cyber/Spectrum skill-sets, and recognize superior “EMSO Decathletes.”  Decathlon participants will engage in basic exercises in spectrum, radio frequency propagation, frequency allocation, polarization, direction finding and geolocation, repeater placement, satellite communications, waveforms, jamming principles, cyber vulnerability concepts, EMS trivia challenge and more, progressing through a series of interactive lanes featuring technologies, equipment and platforms utilized today and planned for the future.

The theme for this year’s CEMA conference is: “CEMA as a Critical Enabler to Modernization Priorities".  We will showcase the important role CEMA technologies and capabilities can play in helping achieve the CSA’s top 6 priority areas:  Long Range precision Fire, Next Generation Combat vehicle, Future Vertical Lift, Network/C3I modernization, Advanced Missile Defense, and Soldier Lethality.   Conference presentations may be Classified, TS/SCI US Only or REL FVEY, or Secret Releasable FVEY.

Conference presentations may be classified TS/SCI US Only or REL FVEY, or Secret Releasable FVEY.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring together government, military, industry, academia, small business and other stakeholders for discussions on the operational challenges facing the practitioners of these IRCs, and to explore possible technological and tactics/procedural solutions. To stimulate wider interest and inquiry into these issues, the symposium and related activities and events will be open to registration by government, industry and academia representatives without regard to their AOC membership status (both AOC Members and non-members may register) except that access of foreign and any other persons may be restricted as necessary in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.               

The symposium agenda will focus on the role of information operations in maintaining the conditions for continued peace and stability within the region and will feature presentations and panels from senior U.S. Department of Defense leaders.

Call for Presentations

PACOM J39 and the AOC are soliciting original unclassified English language presentations and/or papers for the 7th AOC Pacific Conference / PACOM IO Symposium from subject matter experts in the U.S. and Allied and partner militaries (or ministries of defense/security), as well as from academia and industry on the conference theme. Presentations for the full symposium (9 and 10 October) must be UNCLASSIFIED, or UNCLASSIFIED releasable to the invited Allied and partner militaries of Australia, Canada, Chile, France, French Polynesia,  Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.[23] Presentations for classified sessions at Camp Smith (11 October) should be at the SECRET REL/FVEY level, or at higher classification for smaller U.S.-Only break-out sessions.

This course provides an introduction to Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) radar systems, their characteristics and performance. This knowledge is then adapted to Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, and how they can be designed to detect and defeat LPI radars. The U.S. Air Force is flying for the first time at least one unarmed, unmanned drone from an air base in Poland, a move that comes soon after Warsaw said it wants to pay for a permanent American military presence in the country. U.S. Air Forces in Europe said in a recent statement that it is operating an MQ-9 Reaper aircraft at Miroslawiec Air Base “as a visible expression of U.S. efforts to enhance regional stability.” (Stars and Stripes)

  

The U.S. Navy has awarded its long-awaited Over-the-Horizon Weapon Systems contract to Raytheon, which had joined together with Norwegian defense contractor Kongsberg to offer the Naval Strike Missile, or NSM. The service sees the weapon as an important anti-ship and land-attack weapon capability for the Littoral Combat Ship and its future frigates, but the selection could also pave the way for adding the missiles to other types of ships and for other services to acquire air- and ground-launched versions. (The Drive)

  

Widely considered to be the 'fifth domain' of warfare, developing technology that will deliver the competitive edge against adversaries in the electromagnetic spectrum is being fuelled by geopolitical tensions. For western nations occupied with low-level stabilisation and counter-insurgency missions for over a decade, the requirement to retain and modernise EW capabilities for peer conflicts has waned. That has not been mirrored by the likes of Russia and China, which are forging ahead in this domain. (Shephard Media)

The US Navy’s modernisation of its ageing electronic warfare equipment, including the acquisition of a new helicopter-borne EW pod, is continuing as the service attempts to strengthen its surface vessel's defences against new-generation anti-ship missile threats. Two of the navy's key EW programmes are the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block 2 and the Advanced Off-board Electronic Warfare (AOEW) programme. (Shephard Media)
