DON'T MISS TOMORROW'S WEBINAR: EW vs Cyber, May 4

Thursday, May 04, 2017 | 14:00-15:00 EST

Throughout its history, EW has repeatedly been "superseded" by newer concepts and all but forgotten - at least until the shooting starts, at which point the cost of catching up is always high. As the new concept on the block, cyber is currently attracting significant attention and funding, potentially to the detriment of EW. More worryingly, cyber practitioners sometimes argue that the EMS is part of the newly-defined cyber domain, thereby effectively claiming that EW is subordinate to cyber. Is this the end of the EW world as we know it?

This webinar will investigate the relationship between EW and cyber from a technical perspective rather than from a policy perspective. The notion that EW is subordinate to cyber or vice versa will be considered and possible answers provided. Some differences between the two domains will be highlighted, and the suggestion that these domains are equivalent will be explored. Finally, a possible mechanism to facilitate understanding the relationship between EW and cyber will be developed.

AOC VIRTUAL SERIES: Compact Hybrid RF Architecture for SIGINT Applications, May 18

Thursday, May 18, 2017, 14:00-15:00 EDT | 18:00-19:00 UTC

SIGINT is the Greatest ... if You can get any useful information!
If You cannot it becomes a real pain.

Of course a lot in SIGINT is about software but a lot is also about receivers. And if You want to do SIGINT 'on-the-march' it is also about Size, Weight and Power.

To approach the issue above from a reasonable standpoint, this webinar is first giving an introduction into recent and current receiver architectures considering limitations in size, weight and power. After receiving a radio signal and before exploiting it, it is normally about digitizing it. As a consequence, in the second step, this webinar gives some explanations on the digitizing process, on FFT windowing and also on FFT overlapping.

In fact, sophisticated FFT (i.e., windowing and overlapping) can be a very nice benefit: If Your equipment has no decoding capability, ultimately it can be sophisticated FFT providing you with at least an idea of a radio signal's identity. So in the third step this webinar gives several practical examples on sophisticated FFT's benefits in case of limited resources.

JUNE WEBINAR: Active Receiving Antennas: Fundamentals and Applications, June 1

Thursday, June 01, 2017 | 14:00-15:00 EST

The usage of active receiving antennas for radio monitoring and spectrum surveillance purposes is nowadays well established. Reasons for this are obvious, when it comes to broadband capabilities and when small size is crucial, there is usually no better solution than an active antenna.

The webinar starts with an explanation of the fundamental working principles of active antennas, and describes the differences compared to passive antennas. The important technical parameters relating to active antennas are asserted and typical system applications are discussed. A detailed system comparison between a passive solution and an active antenna approach finalizes the presentation.

DENVER CHAPTER: RF Geolocation Workshop, June 7-8
This two day workshop will cover the basics of emitter geolocation plus recent advances in the field. Emitter geolocation is the identification or estimation of the real-world geographic location of an object that emits some type of signal, such as a radar, mobile radio, RFID or even an acoustic source. In its simplest form geolocation involves the generation of a set of geographic coordinates and is closely related to the use of positioning systems. The techniques of emitter geolocation apply regardless of the spectral range of the emissions and typically involve estimation of the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and/or Frequency Difference of Arrival (FDOA) among multiple spatially diverse detectors. Applications of emitter geolocation are also numerous ranging from asset tracking to traffic monitoring to defense uses such as battlespace management.

AOC NEWS: Collaboration Takes Center Stage at Electronic Warfare Symposium
More than 600 industry and government leaders in electronic warfare gathered for the 46th Annual Collaborative Electronic Warfare Symposium at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California, April 25 – 27. Key leaders from the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marines Corps, and the Royal Australian Air Force as well as industry and academia came together at Point Mugu, the home of U.S. Navy electronic warfare capabilities. "It’s significant that we hold the symposium here at Point Mugu because this is where the first organizational capability was established for naval aviation electronic warfare in the 1950s," said Ron Gewerth, NAWCWD computer scientist and this year’s conference chairperson. "There’s been a lot of work going on here, a lot of development and innovation, and we’re trying to help that continue on." (DVIDs)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Iraq: Proving Ground For Multi-Domain Battle
The brutal ground war in Iraq holds vital lessons for sophisticated future operations in the Pacific, Australian Maj. Gen. Roger Noble said today. Military pundits often draw a sharp distinction between what they consider low-tech warfare against irregular forces, as in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, and high-tech war against states like China and Russia. But when Noble went from a tour in Iraq last year to the Hawaii headquarters of US Army Pacific, he said, the cutting-edge concepts of Multi-Domain Battle that USARPAC is experimenting with forcefully reminded him of coalition operations against Daesh, the self-proclaimed Islamic State. INDUSTRY NEWS: U.S. Official: Russia Installed System in Crimea to Snoop on U.S. Destroyers, Jam Communications
Russia has installed a modern mobile electronic warfare system in Crimea to eavesdrop on U.S. ships in the Black Sea and potentially jam their communications, a U.S. defense official confirmed to USNI News on Monday. The installation of the Murmansk BN system in mid-March was a direct reaction to an increased U.S. and NATO presence in the region, the official told USNI News. "It’s pretty clear they’re trying to reinforce their sphere of influence in the Black Sea region," the official said. The system is designed to both collect signals emanating from adversary ships or aircraft as well as jam high-frequency communications. (USNI News)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Why America Should Fear China's Electronic Warfare Plane
The United States Navy’s EA-18G Growler electronic attack fighters are one of a small number of military aircraft types dedicated to the task of jamming—and potentially destroying—hostile radars that could guide deadly surface-to-air missiles against friendly aircraft. This mission is known as Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). Basically, if a modern air force wants to attack an adversary with significant antiaircraft defenses, it needs an effective SEAD game to avoid insupportable losses. (The National Interest)

INDUSTRY NEWS: China’s Vision of the Future Networked Battlefield
Compared to the extensive coverage on China’s traditional war-fighting capabilities (e.g. its ‘carrier killer’ anti-ship missiles) far less ink has been spilled on Chinese thinking on the critical systems and nodes (or C4ISR in military lexicon), which enable and enhance these advanced weapons. These systems expand the range, accuracy, and lethality of Beijing’s military power projection. This war-fighting toolkit includes: long-range precision strike missiles for use in early and preemptive strikes; stealth jet fighters to bypass enemy air defenses, and destroy its command and control centers; anti-satellite missiles to take out critical space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems; and other emerging technologies such as rail-guns, ‘stealth-defeating’ quantum radars, and autonomous systems.
