AOC VIRTUAL SERIES: Wideband Frequency Conversion and Characterization, February 2

The frequency converter is a key component in heterodyne systems including radars, communication systems, and EW systems. Advanced electronic systems utilize wide instantaneous bandwidth and wide tuning bandwidth for several reasons. In radar, bandwidth translates into range resolution, while in communications applications, bandwidth is related to symbol data rate. Electronic warfare (EW) deals with either protecting, disrupting or intercepting these radar or communications functions. For example, LPI waveforms utilize wide bandwidth with either frequency hopping or spreading. A wideband, fast tuning jammer or receiver is necessary to counter LPI waveforms in radar or comms applications.
This webinar discusses common frequency converter architectures and design tradeoffs, including multi-stage frequency conversion. We discuss unique features of upconversion systems versus downconverters. Example discussed include X-band (8-12 GHz) converters, 2-18 converters and Ka-band converters with up to 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth. We also discuss digital conversion systems, which when combined with wideband frequency converters give rise to system applications such as digital receiver/exciters (DREXs), communication modems and digital RF memories (DRFMs). Characterization of wideband frequency conversion systems will be discussed, with an emphasis on measurement of key parameters such as spurious-free dynamic range, P1dB, IP3, phase noise, harmonics and LO leakage. Finally, we discuss phase coherence of a multi-channel frequency conversion system, which is useful in phased array, MIMO and direction-finding (DF) applications.

AOC EW Singapore: Wrapping Up a Great Event
AOC EW Singapore, the AOC’s first Global Conference in the country, concluded Wednesday. AOC International Region 1 Director Dr Sue Robertson represented the AOC President and BOD, chaired Day 2 and was one of 24 world class presenters at the conference, which attracted 290 delegates and visitors from around 30 countries, resulting in a packed conference hall from start to finish. Elettronica Group was the associate partner, thinklogical the silver sponsor and Raytheon bronze sponsor with around a dozen leading EW industry partners joining the exhibition. Ongoing analysis of the on-site snapshot survey indicates 100 percent satisfaction from conference attendees and exhibition visitors, with many deeming the event excellent across the board.
The AOC Singapore Chapter supported the conference along with other Chapters, with Dr. Lee Kar Heng, Chapter president, welcoming delegates and giving an excellent presentation; the Singapore Chapter with support from volunteers signed up new AOC members growing by 25 percent in the process. Clarion Events facilitated the EW conference and exhibition and provided all the logistics and operational support. The conference ran alongside three other Clarion conferences and attracted around 50 percent of the total number of participants at the impressive Marina Bay Sands Conference Centre.

The AOC is accepting nominations for the 2017 elections to the Board of
Directors and for president-elect of the Association. You all are in a
great position to help to shape and decide the future of the Association
of Old Crows! Nominations will be accepted beginning now through March
1st, 2017. Elections begin on September 1st, 2017 and will end on
September 30th, 2017.
In addition to selecting our next President (vice president in 2018
followed by their two-year presidential term), this year's elections
include two At Large Director positions, each for a three-year term.
Also, three Regional Directors will be elected for their three (3)-year
terms as well — one each from the Mountain-Western Region, the
Northeastern Region, and the Southern Region. These five new directors
and the president-elect will be installed at the 2017 Symposium &
Convention in Washington DC.

 INDUSTRY NEWS: U.S. Navy Fast-Tracks New Electronic Warfare Sensor (To Defend Against Enemy Missiles) To provide better sea-surface electronic warfare (EW) capability, Lockheed Martin is adding enhanced sensors to MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters. The company is developing an EW pod for both MH-60 R/S Sea Hawk versions to help provide anti-ship missile defense as part of Lockheed’s Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP), said Joe Ottaviano, EW director at Lockheed. Called the Advanced Offboard Electronic Warfare (AOEW) system, the airborne sensor and links will extend the range over the horizon and offer some electronic attack potential, Ottaviano said Jan. 9 during a briefing in advance of the Surface Navy Association (SNA) annual conference.  INDUSTRY NEWS: Army Seeks Electromagnetic Pulse Artillery If the U.S. Army has its way, America’s next secret weapon may be an electromagnetic pulse artillery shell that paralyzes an enemy city. These special shells won’t carry high explosive. Instead they will emit EMP bursts, or some other non-kinetic technology, to disrupt the computers, radio communications, Internet links and other ties that bind modern societies. And do so without creating any physical damage. This is sort of a twenty-first-century version of the neutron bomb, that notorious Cold War weapon designed to kill Soviet soldiers through a burst of radiation, while inflicting little damage to property.  INDUSTRY NEWS: New Pentagon Electronic War Strategy Counters Russia The Pentagon’s soon-to-be published Electronic Warfare strategy calls for increased investment in advanced electronic warfare technology designed to defend U.S. assets and proactively use the electromagnetic spectrum to attack enemies. DOD officials say the new strategy will be signed and distributed in the next two months, with additional annexes expected to be ready by Summer 2017.  INDUSTRY NEWS: Morocco Boosts Military with Electronic Warfare Gear from American Harris The Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) is receiving advanced electronic warfare threat protection systems from American Harris Corporation’s Electronic Systems, American-based news agency, United Press International (UPI) reported on Wednesday. UPI has revealed that the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract has been issued by the U.S. Air Force’s Warner Robins Air Logistics Center. It acquisition involves the AN/ALQ-211 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suite, or AIDEWS, which is the only combat-ready electronic warfare system available to allied countries flying the favoured F-16 aircraft.  INDUSTRY NEWS: The Moscow School of Hard Knocks: Key Pillars of Russian Strategy The scandal over Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election is only the latest in a series of geopolitical contests with Russia in which Moscow has often gotten the better of the United States. The "new Cold War" isn’t going all that well for anyone besides Vladimir Putin. Washington certainly has the least to show for it. Following public outcry, the Obama administration released intelligence on the Russian hacking operation, but the clumsily written disclosures only made Vladimir Putin look bigger and badder.  INDUSTRY NEWS: With a Shrinking Fleet IAF Has Tough Choices Ahead The IAF has just 33 squadrons, nine short of the 42 squadrons needed to tackle China and Pakistan together, says Ajai Shukla. On December 28, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, the retiring Indian Air Force chief, declared in New Delhi that the IAF requires 200 to 250 medium fighters in addition to the 36 Rafale multi-role fighters that were contracted with French vendor Dassault earlier this year. The 36-Rafale contract was signed for €7.8 billion (Rs 55,600 cror/Rs 556 billione). Another 200 Rafales, or comparable fighters, would require €43.3 billion (Rs 310,000 crore/Rs 3.1 trillion), far beyond India’s means given the current defence spending. (The Northlines)

INDUSTRY NEWS: Neller: ‘We Need a Fifth-Generation Marine Corps’ Fighting and winning against emerging peer competitors will require a "fifth-generation Marine Corps" capable of competing in technological domains, as well as the traditional air, sea and land kinetic arenas, the top Marine officer said Jan. 12.  INDUSTRY NEWS: How Russia's Military Plans to Counter the Pentagon's Drone Swarms Over the past decade, Russian armed forces and Russian defense industry have made strides in developing, testing and fielding domestically produced unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). While lagging behind their Western and East Asian counterparts in reach, distance and strike capability, Russia nonetheless was successful in using smaller and lighter UAV concepts for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) purposes, both at home and in conflicts abroad. In fact, Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) officially states that ISR remains the primary purpose for its various UAV platforms. More specifically, the war in Eastern Ukraine showcased Russia's use of unmanned aerial systems that enhanced Russian-allied forces' ability to more accurately target Ukrainian opposition and gain significant advantage on the battlefield.
