INDUSTRY NEWS: Palmetto Roost Chapter and Charleston Southern University Host Computer Science Bootcamp
A recent Milken Institute study ranks Charleston fourth in the nation for high tech growth domestic product growth. All Lowcountry colleges and universities are trying to make sure its students are prepared for those opportunities. Originally, the Chair of Charleston Southern’s Computer Science Department, Dr. Valerie Sessions, planned for this week’s boot camp to be limited to 10 students. "The demand was so great, we expanded the week-long class to 15. Next year, our plan is to invite some high school students, as well," says Sessions. Shane Hudson, a Network Security professor at Trident Tech, taught and challenged the class. At the end of the week, the students will be prepared to pass a Network certification exam. "It will also give these students a leg-up in their job hunting," explained Hudson. US Navy recruiters explained to the class during one session the opportunities that exist for these students, if they choose to use their skills in the military. Recruiters also explained a brand new designator called a Cyber Warfare Engineer that the Navy is offering computer science graduates to keep the cyberscape of America’s Navy safe, secure, and effective.Charleston is now mentioned in the same breath with other tech hot spots such as Austin, Raleigh and San Francisco. |
